The IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) is at the forefront of advancing electron devices and technologies, not only through its existing activities but also by strategically funding initiatives that align with its mission and vision. These initiatives are designed to create impactful outcomes, bolstering EDS’s technical leadership, relevance, outreach, and influence while upholding its core values for the global technical communities.
EDS has an established process for soliciting proposals that contribute to the advancement of electron devices and the growth of its global communities. These initiatives focus on enhancing technical activities, conferences, publications, member services, outreach programs, education and professional development. EDS also dedicates funding to STEM-related and humanitarian projects that leverage its technical expertise. Typically, each project is eligible for funding between $10,000 and $25,000, with the funds available for use within a specified calendar year.
In recent years, EDS has directed significant funding toward initiatives that strengthen its core activities, including advancing technical fields, improving conferences, and enhancing publications. By funding the development of a conference organization platform, EDS aims to equip organizers with an easy-to-use solution, thereby facilitating broader accessibility and global engagement. Additionally, initiatives that boost technical activities, establish new conferences and enhance publication attractiveness reinforce EDS’s position as a leader in electron devices. These efforts not only bolster society’s leadership and relevance but also foster innovation and collaboration within the global technical community.
To engage members and promote inclusivity, EDS supports initiatives that recognize the contributions of underrepresented groups while fostering the professional growth of Young Professionals and Women in Electron Devices. EDS also invests in educational programs, including training sessions, short courses for practicing engineers, and STEM initiatives, which provide essential learning opportunities for students and professionals. Funding from EDS has been pivotal in launching its summer school programs. To further strengthen the community, EDS celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the Transistor with a variety of funded activities. EDS’s initiative funding has also been instrumental in launching its social media program, ensuring broader engagement and outreach across the global community.
Additionally, EDS places a strong emphasis on sustainability and humanitarian efforts, supporting projects that leverage its technical expertise to address both regional and global challenges. EDS has backed initiatives that support environmental sustainability and deliver technological solutions to underserved communities, particularly through solar/PV and sensor technologies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, EDS-funded projects focused on healthcare and public safety measures utilizing device technologies. These efforts underscore EDS’s commitment to harnessing technology to benefit human society, both in normal times and during crises.

These initiatives are designed to enhance EDS’s activities, operations, and engagement with the global community. We are dedicated to improving our monitoring and feedback mechanisms to maximize the value and reach of these projects. By closely tracking progress, gathering insights, and providing feedback, EDS aims to ensure that these initiatives not only achieve their goals but also deliver sustainable outcomes and create lasting impacts, thereby expanding the communities that benefit from their success. This approach continuously strengthens the effectiveness of EDS-funded projects, ensuring they contribute to society’s long-term vision.
