Transforming the Member Experience: IEEE’s New AI-Driven Personalization Initiative

By Jessica Bian and Matt Scott, Chairs, TAB Ad Hoc Committee on Developing AI-Driven Individualized Products and Services with IEEE Data

In January 2026, the IEEE Technical Activities established the TAB Ad Hoc Committee on Developing AI-Driven Individualized Products and Services with IEEE Data. This initiative marks a strategic shift to integrating advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) into the core of the IEEE member experience. The goal of this effort is to transform how members engage with IEEE’s extensive collection of knowledge and resources by better understanding everyone’s unique needs.

Personalized Products and Services Based on Professional Journeys

The primary goal of the committee is to leverage internal data and AI techniques to create personalized products and services that strongly connect with members’ unique professional journeys. In an era of increasing information overload, the committee believes that delivering tailored content is crucial for making members feel understood and valued. This personalized approach is expected to drive deeper connections, increase engagement, and significantly improve the return on investment for the global membership base.

The scope of this project is broad, requiring coordination at the IEEE level to gather input from a wide range of diverse resources. These include, but are not limited to, mentor databases, job boards, learning networks, technical publications, newsletters, and conferences. The goal is to create a dynamic system that offers personalized guidance and tailored messaging based on specific career paths, research interests, and professional compatibility. This system will build on an idea proposed for the IEEE Innovation Summit in 2025 and improve existing tools like the IEEE Career Guidance Counselor.

Career Services Adapted to Member Preferences

The project has concrete deliverables aimed at demonstrating transformative potential by mid-2026. By June 2026, the committee plans to launch one or more pilot systems and controlled rollouts. One example is a personalized career services tool that adapts to user preferences and helps reduce the overwhelming number of emails members receive. By combining and customizing messages into fewer, more relevant recommendations, IEEE aims to respect members’ time while boosting the value of every communication.

Trust and integrity remain at the forefront of this digital transformation. The committee has committed to adhering strictly to IEEE’s code of ethics and privacy policy. This ensures that all AI-driven deliverables remain factual, constructive, and fully aligned with the established IEEE governance framework. The project focuses on using data responsibly to empower members without compromising their privacy.

The committee is led by Chairs Jessica Bian and Matt Scott, who oversee a diverse group of members, including Robby Robson, Anjan Biswas, Ashwini Kurady, Wrick Talukdar, Mei Lin Fung, Kishan Joshi, Laura Creighton, Beverly Yow,  and Marc Beebe. Matt Scott also serves as a critical liaison to the IEEE Industry Engagement Committee, ensuring that the individualized services remain relevant to the evolving needs of the global technology industry.

Following the June pilots, feedback will be gathered and analyzed by October 2026. The committee is required to provide periodic status reports on its successes and challenges to the TAB Management Committee (TMC) and the Technical Activities Board (TAB) throughout the year. This will culminate in a comprehensive year-end report that includes progress updates and strategic recommendations for the next steps in IEEE’s journey toward an AI-enhanced future.
