IEEE for Industry: Connecting Talent, Companies, and Communities

By Jessica Bian, Chair, IEEE Industry Engagement Committee

The IEEE Industry Engagement Committee (IEC) advances IEEE’s strategic goals by building bridges between technical communities and the industries they serve. Whether helping corporations connect with engineers or enabling IEEE members to grow their careers, IEC serves as the face of IEEE for industry.

Formed in 2018, the IEC’s mission is simple yet essential: to make IEEE more relevant to professionals working in industry, government, and emerging technology fields. In alignment with IEEE’s Strategic Plan, IEC focuses on three pillars:

  • Strengthening IEEE’s value for industry members and corporate partners
  • Supporting students and young professionals as they transition into the workforce
  • Facilitating collaboration between IEEE’s Societies, Technical Councils, and industry stakeholders

Today, IEC brings together representatives from all major IEEE organizational units (OUs) and over 30 Societies and Technical Councils through its working groups, ensuring that industry engagement becomes a shared and sustained priority across IEEE.

Driving Value and Impact

IEC’s initiatives demonstrate how IEEE can combine innovation, community, and professional growth in tangible ways. From launching new digital tools to hosting events worldwide, the Committee’s projects are designed to help members and industry practitioners stay connected to the technologies shaping our future.

Earlier this year, IEC launched the IEEE Industry Newsletter, delivering real-world insights and opportunities directly to engineers, entrepreneurs, and corporate leaders. With three (3) issues already published and an expanding readership, the newsletter highlights industry trends, member stories, and engagement opportunities for both individuals and organizations.

Industry-Focused Events: The IEEE World Technology Summits

IEC also curates events that bring together engineers, researchers, and corporate innovators. Through the IEEE World Technology Summits (WTS) series, IEC engages the product and service engineering community around pre-competitive, high-impact challenges.

Each Summit is organized in partnership with IEEE Societies and local Sections, ensuring that technical depth meets real-world relevance. Recent events include:

  • IEEE WTS Berlin 2025Digital Automotive Technologies, hosted with IEEE CTSoc, VTS, and Region 8 (wts.ieee.org)
  • IEEE WTS Peoria 2025AI in Manufacturing, sponsored by Caterpillar and the IEEE Computer Society
  • IEEE WTS Sendai and Hong Kong 2025 – exploring AI Infrastructure and The Robotics Economy, hosted with IEEE EDS and IEEE Region 10

These global gatherings exemplify the collaboration between IEEE volunteers, industry experts, and Societies to advance technology and foster innovation.

Bridging the Gap: AI Tools and Member Enablement

IEC is also pioneering the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to support IEEE members’ professional journeys.

The IEEE Career Guidance Counselor (ICGC) — an AI-powered chatbot currently in pilot phase — helps members find mentors, discover jobs, identify relevant training, and optimize their resumes.

Complementing this effort, the Industry Content Platform (ICP) transforms academic research into industry-ready insights, helping practitioners apply IEEE knowledge to real-world challenges while ensuring that authors and editors remain central to the process.

Together, these tools are creating a digital ecosystem where IEEE’s vast technical resources directly support career growth and corporate innovation.

Recognizing and Growing IEEE’s Industry Community

Member recognition remains a cornerstone of IEC’s work. In collaboration with IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) and Technical Activities (TA), IEC supported the elevation of 4,500+ professionals to IEEE Senior Member — a 32% increase over the previous year — and contributed to a 6% rise in IEEE industry membership overall.

These achievements represent more than numbers; they signify a stronger sense of belonging among professionals who see IEEE not only as a source of knowledge but also as a career partner.
