If you have ever asked a question on a platform, emailed a friend, or streamed a movie, Division III has played a role. Division III of Technical Activities comprises one large society: the IEEE Communications Society, also known as ComSoc. The expertise within Division III spans physical signal transmission to network configurations and applications.
ComSoc is fueled by its members—past, present, and future—who contribute technical expertise to conferences, publications, and technical communities. Local chapters provide education, exploration, and camaraderie to engineers across industry, academia, and government. To enhance its services, ComSoc has developed robust global strategies to benefit its community and humanity.
Communication for All
A joint initiative between ComSoc and IEEE Tech4Good, the Communication for All program tackles the global digital divide by mobilizing members to deploy grassroots connectivity solutions. The program funds regional projects with grants to target essential United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Real-world impact is already visible. In Turkana, Kenya, a project is establishing an affordable community Wi-Fi network to connect local populations and institutions. By combining localized technical infrastructure with community-led training, ComSoc chapters ensure these advancements remain sustainable long-term.
Strategic Restructuring and Innovation
ComSoc has undertaken a comprehensive, multi-stage restructuring of its Technical Committees (TCs) to strengthen the Society’s long-term technical leadership to streamline overlapping technical communities, ensure broad coverage of the Society’s field of interest, and establish consistent governance practices across all groups, including harmonized policies, procedures, and awards guidelines
ComSoc consolidated 26 Technical Committees (TCs), 10 Emerging Technology Initiatives (ETIs), and various Special Interest Groups into 12 strategically aligned TCs. This ecosystem aligns directly with ComSoc’s flagship conference structures (ICC and GLOBECOM), while outlying areas transitioned into Technical Working Groups to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration.
These TCs are also driving some incredible initiatives that encourage engagement and collaboration with members and industry.
The TC Innovation Project accelerates emerging communications technologies by providing financial support to grassroots ideas, funding more than 40 high-impact projects over the last two years.
The Research Pitch Sessions bridge the gap between academia and industry. Researchers present their work directly to industry “Innovation Scouts” to secure mentorship, funding, and deployment pathways.
Empowering Students and Chapters
ComSoc has expanded support for its network of over 400 Student Branch Chapters by increasing funding, enhancing training, and launching an online Student Branch Resource Center. Additionally, the Twin Chapters Program grew to 64 participating chapters in 2026, strengthening international collaboration and expertise exchange.
Programs like the ComSoc Student Tech Leadership Conference and the Student Ambassador program further empower student volunteers as local champions, offering dedicated leadership tracks and recruitment events that foster professional growth. Over 14 new Student Tech Leadership Conferences have been launched recently, with more planned, while over 65 student ambassadors use their personal strengths to advocate for our community.
Furthermore, ComSoc’s Four Minute Thesis (4MT) Competition at ComSoc’s flagship conferences challenges Ph.D. students to present complex research to non-specialists in just four minutes. Attracting nearly 200 global submissions, this initiative boosts communication skills, research visibility, and professional networking.
Maximizing Industry Collaboration: The ComSoc Corporate Program & Connector
Launched to formalize and strengthen strategic partnerships between industry leaders and the society, the ComSoc Corporate Program brings technology innovators closer to the global community. Every investment a company makes qualifies them for tiered rewards, including personalized service from a corporate program manager, company branding, and early access to future conference insights.
To scale this industry integration, ComSoc launched the ComSoc Connector, a dedicated digital platform designed to bridge the gap between specialized talent and market needs.
- For Industry: The platform serves as a targeted portal to identify technical talent and university lab resources for research collaborations.
- For Members & Academia: It allows individuals to build professional profiles highlighting specific technical expertise, while academic laboratories can showcase their capabilities directly to potential industry sponsors.
Looking Ahead
As we look toward the future, ComSoc remains dedicated to breaking down barriers—whether they are technological, geographical, or professional. By uniting the grassroots passion of our student chapters, the cutting-edge research of academia, and the strategic power of our corporate partners, we are doing more than just building better networks; we are building a more connected humanity. Together, we will continue to turn scientific discovery into real-world impact, ensuring that the future of communications technology is inclusive, innovative, and driven by community.
