Building Bridges: How IEEE ComSoc Connects Industry and Academia

By Cynthia A. Sikora, Director, Industry Outreach and Technical Activities, IEEE Communications Society

The core mission of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) has always been to advance communication and networking technology for the betterment of humanity. This progress is not achieved in a vacuum; it is the direct result of vital collaboration between the brightest minds in academia and the innovative leaders in industry. Recognizing the critical synergy of this partnership, ComSoc has launched a series of dynamic initiatives designed to deepen its industry engagement, connect academic researchers with industry partners, and create new opportunities for technological breakthroughs.

These efforts extend beyond traditional conference support, building a robust ecosystem that provides tangible value to corporate partners and academic members.  Innovation from the research lab to real-world application is facilitated through ComSoc’s industry engagement activities: the ComSoc Corporate Program, the new ComSoc Connector platform, and the inaugural Research Collaboration Pitch Sessions.

The ComSoc Corporate Program: A Framework for Partnership

Launched in 2023, the ComSoc Corporate Program is a loyalty initiative designed to reward and recognize companies that consistently support ComSoc’s mission. The program has brought progressive and accomplished companies closer to the ComSoc community, fostering partnership and collaboration. The program began with two pioneering companies during the pilot phase in 2022 and has now expanded to include nineteen participating companies. Participation is determined by a company’s annual expenditure on ComSoc activities, which include conference sponsorships, exhibits, advertising, training, and memberships. The program offers three levels of participation and currently includes 19 industry partners, featuring global leaders such as Huawei, Nokia, Qualcomm, Ericsson, Keysight Technologies, MathWorks, VIAVI Solutions, and Cisco, all of which are in the top two tiers.

The benefits for these partners are significant. Participating companies receive discounts on memberships, training, and advertising, but the real value lies in increasing their visibility within the industry and establishing relationships with the “best and brightest” in communications technology. Partner companies also gain early access to opportunities to participate in ComSoc events and activities.  With input from ComSoc’s Industry Advisory Group, the Industry Outreach Board (IOB), ComSoc’s longstanding industry outreach initiative, oversees the entire program to ensure it adapts to the evolving needs of our industry partners.

The ComSoc Connector: A New Platform for Talent and Collaboration

A major new benefit for ComSoc members and corporate partners introduced this year is the ComSoc Connector. This digital platform is designed to be a direct conduit between ComSoc’s talent pool and its industry partners, streamlining opportunities for recruitment, collaboration, and outsourcing.

The platform functions in two main ways

•    For Members:  Individuals can create profiles to be considered for recruitment by industry partners.  Academics can also establish Research Lab Profiles to showcase their work, find potential collaboration partners, or highlight their resources and capabilities, allowing companies to outsource research to their university.

•    For Companies:  Corporate partners gain exclusive access to a highly specialized technical talent pool, with visibility into academic resources closely aligned with their specific technical areas.

The ComSoc Connector transforms the bridge between industry and academia from a concept into a searchable, practical tool for making direct connections.

Research Collaboration Pitch Sessions: Bridging the Gap

Perhaps the most exciting new initiative is the ComSoc Research Collaboration Pitch Session, a new forum specifically designed to “build a bridge between industry and academia.” This is where the connection comes to life.

The new ComSoc Research Collaboration Pitch Session is the forum where academics and industry leaders literally meet in the middle. This initiative was explicitly designed to connect academic researchers with industry partners to stimulate conversations and foster joint efforts in innovation. This program, launched in Q4 2025, directly addresses the need to connect foundational research with real-world applications.

The Pitch Session provides a unique opportunity for top academic minds, including faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and advanced doctoral students, to present the bold problem spaces they are tackling to a curated audience of industrial researchers, corporate R&D leaders, and innovation scouts. The goal is to stimulate conversations around joint innovation that lead to real-world impact and funding. The inaugural sessions at IEEE MECOM 2025 in Cairo and ComSoc’s flagship conference, IEEE GLOBECOM 2025 in Taipei, will be the first of these crucial, face-to-face meetings.

Critically, these initiatives are interconnected. ComSoc Corporate Program participating companies are invited to the pitch sessions as the innovation scouts. To participate as researchers in the Pitch Session, academic submitters are required to complete a Research Lab Profile on the ComSoc Connector platform, seamlessly integrating these new tools to maximize opportunities for connection.

Industry Engagement Strategy:  Building Bridges with Academia

ComSoc’s industry initiatives are not three separate programs; they form one comprehensive strategy. The Corporate Program secures the industry anchor. The ComSoc Connector provides the digital pathway, and the Research Collaboration Pitch Sessions create the vital, face-to-face meeting point where innovation comes to life. By building this comprehensive bridge, ComSoc is enabling and encouraging its members from industry and academia to collaborate and innovate in communications technology for the benefit of humanity.

Together, these programs represent an integrated system that positions ComSoc as the essential community for industry and academia.  By creating structured pathways for partnership, a dedicated tool for connection, and a high-stakes forum for innovation, ComSoc is helping its members and partners do more than just network; it’s empowering them to bring research to life, connect with industry, and shape the future of communications.

One Response

  1. Hello,

I hope that the Foothill section ComSoc chapter can co-host the Research Collaboration Pitch Sessions if possible. Let me know how can we can get involved.
